STRUCTURE OF YOUR CLASSES: In this two-day workshop, we will explore the colored pencil medium through a series of exercises and reference drawings. The instructor will provide the reference material. The goal is to gain confidence drawing in color, expand your options in subject matter and composition. Included are tips, tricks and shortcuts to successful colored pencil drawings, layering, burnishing and grisaille techniques.

SUBJECT MATTER: The instructor will provide workbook and all paper needed for exercises.

CRITIQUES: There will be instructor demonstrations, constructive critiques and personal guidance. There will be group and individual critiques of class work.

WHAT THE STUDENT CAN EXPECT TO ACCOMPLISH BY THE END OF YOUR COURSE OF INSTRUCTION: Students will learn about the various type of colored pencils, paper surface, relate materials and tool. They will learn how to create realistic colored pencil paintings using layering and burnishing techniques. They will learn to use reference material effectively, strengthen compositions and develop color strategies. They will explore and create realistic textural effect

MATERIALS: Students must provide their own colored pencils. Prismacolors are preferred. No student grade or watercolor pencils.

INSTRUCTOR: BAISDEN

Jeffrey Smart Baisden is a nationally recognized colored pencil artist and instructor who has worked exclusively in this medium since 1980. She is an experienced teacher of art having taught art in public school and in workshops. Her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, as well as fourteen Colored Pencil Society of America International Exhibitions, receiving Awards of Excellence in 1996, 2001 and 2007. In February 2003, she received the prestigious CPSA Exceptional Merit Award at the Explore This! Experimental Exhibition. Her drawings are included in the series The Best of Colored Pencil 2, 3 and 4 by Rockport Publishers and Colored Pencil Explorations, 2002. The colored pencil drawing “The Uninvited” was featured on the cover of Art Calendar magazine in February 1999. Her work was featured in the November 2002 issue of American Artist Magazine and The Artist’s Magazine in July 2005. In 1998, she judged “Points of Color”, the first all colored pencil exhibition in Florida. Jeffrey is a signature and ten year merit award member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and a past president of the Florida chapter of CPSA. She was selected to teach one of the two national workshops at the CPSA Convention and Exhibition in Memphis, 2004 as well as workshops throughout the country.
