COURSE NAME: FINDING YOUR OWN DIRECTION
COURSE #: W105
START DATE: 3/01/10
DAYS: M, TH
# WKS: 1
TIME: 10:00-1:00
FEE: $175.00
MEMBER FEE: $131.25
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: This workshop will provide students with the foundational tools they need to find their own direction in watercolor painting, and have fun doing it! Students of all levels are welcome, but I place particular emphasis on beginning students, and those who want guidance in moving to the next level. Intermediate students can improve if they return to basic principles and explore new directions. Class size is limited so that I can work individually with each student.
STRUCTURE OF YOUR CLASSES: I will provide set-ups and also invite students to bring subject material, focusing primarily on objects rather than photos. We work with a range of compositions from very simple to more complex to suit everyone’s ability. We will work primarily in the studio, but venture into plein air if there is interest. I do some demonstrating to illustrate a point - but it can be very distracting, so I limit that. My goal is to discover the most exciting and rewarding direction for each student, through a lot of individual attention. I don't try to make everyone paint the same way - certainly not like me - but to find out what they can do and then help them go further in their own direction. Some questions I will be asking: Can you draw well or not (drawing skill is NOT a prerequisite!)? Are you naturally good with color or value? What excites you? What artistic style appeals to you?
SUBJECT MATTER: We will explore:
1. Composition: how to use value and color to create artistic shapes that define a painting
2. Materials: with an emphasis on quality paper, paint and brushes
3. Technique: classic watercolor as well as more experimental approaches
CRITIQUES: At the end of each day, we have a "show" with mats that I supply, which is really a "critique" in which we all participate - always a high point of the day. By the end of the week, each student should have several finished paintings. We will work primarily with an 8” X 10” size, since it is more important to start many paintings than to finish one. If a student wants to work primarily with larger size images, however, I can work with that.
INSTRUCTOR: INESON
Hannah began painting with a focus on the coastal Maine scenery, when she and her husband settled there in 1972. Her award-winning paintings have been shown in many locations throughout New England and she has turned many of her paintings into greeting cards and fine art prints. She has participated in many area shows and galleries over the years, taught watercolor in Mexico to International Elderhostel students, and has conducted many Maine watercolor workshops. She was a member of the faculty of Round Top Center for the Arts, Damariscotta, Maine and is now teaching watercolor for River Arts in Damariscotta during the summer season. Since 2004, Hannah has painted in the Florida Everglades during the winter months, where she shows her work and teaches watercolor workshops. She will be a visiting instructor at the Marco Island Art League in March 2010.
